Charlie
Miller will conduct his workshop as a walking tour of the trees
in Wicker Park, located at 1425 N. Damen. We will examine many of the trees, both established and newly planted,
and come to realize how we can assist arborists in observing the
health of our trees and shrubs. Trees do not take care of
themselves--what should we do and how often to keep our trees
healthy and thriving. Often, we do not recognize the signs of
the decline in the health of a tree or are aware of a
infestation of insects that can lead to the death of a tree.
Recently, a Colorado Blue
Spruce in Wicker Park has suffered from a severe
infestation of bag worms--how could we have prevented this level
of damage--how could we have recognized the early signs? When
does the tree need pruning to maintain its health and the health
of the trees that surround it. Removing dead or dying branches
discourages the spread of decay or insect infestations. It also
removes safety hazards while improving the tree’s appearance.
Proper pruning can also help prevent storm damage. When do we
fertilize, aerate the soil around the tree, spray for insects,
and water? What about mulching? How long do we need to nurture a
newly planted tree--and what is involved in establishing this
newly planted tree. You will learn that plant health care is a
holistic approach to tree and plant maintenance that doesn't
rely solely on treating the obvious symptoms, but instead finds
the underlying problem and removes or corrects it, thereby
changing the environment and allowing the landscape to
flourish. Preventive maintenance helps the tree better defend
itself against insects, disease and site problems.

Consider Your Microclimate--and Push IT!
David Gianneschi, Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects -
www.hoerrschaudt.com
When designing a
garden, you can achieve an added sense of drama and increase your
plant palette if you utilize both natural and manipulated
microclimates. Buildings, slopes, bodies of water, concrete slabs,
and the heat from car traffic can all create areas that vary in
temperature, light, and even growing season from their surrounding
environment. David, horticulturist and designer at Hoerr Schaudt,
has designed both public and private gardens utilizing his knowledge
of microclimates to achieve beautiful results. He will discuss how
to identify, analyze and design for microclimates.
